cherry blossoms at the tidal basin, 2016!

cherry blossoms are kind of a big deal around these parts.
last year the weather was great (remember this?), but we went a few days too late, and it was insanely windy. we also went after work, which was a terrible idea. this year i thought we could outsmart the millions of tourists and spring breakers, and we went at 7:30am on a saturday. 7:30am? smart. the saturday part? eh, not so smart. as was the fact that i think it was THE peak day??? the good news is i think the crowds were, although stifling, exponentially less than they were later in the day when the weather hit 65! and we took the metro! THANK HEAVENS!
there really isn't a great metro exit near the tidal basin- we're walkers, and even i say it's a hike. we left the stroller because we knew there would be lots of stairs and crowds... the jury's out if that was smart. it was a lot of walking. and it was cold!!! 37 to be exact. i wasn't expecting 37. so we played a lot of tag once we found some wide-open grass...
remember when we boated here last summer!? well, they sure didn't have those cool swan boats back then!!! (then again, we were lucky to just GET a boat on a saturday in the summertime...)
wow, that cherry-blossom-encircled tidal basin may be the reason the heart-eyes emoji was created...
wait for it...
tidal basin aside, the cherry blossom and magnolia trees are in full bloom, and they're everywhere! house after house and yard after yard. while i cross campus each morning i watch the sun shine through the blossoms and stop to take a dozen pictures. none even comes close to capturing just how amazing it really looks in person though... springtime here is like nothing else i've ever seen!!
